The minor landed knight and head of the small House Brownhill of Cape Wrath in the reign of King Aegon III Targaryen, lord of a few hides of moor and bramble from a holdfast its neighbors called a castle of "mud and tree roots". He was nearer sixty than fifty by 136 AC, thrice widowed, sire of sixteen children of whom thirteen still lived, when Lord Lorent Grandison and three other stormlords plucked him from his bog as a husband fit for Lady Cassandra Baratheon, whose part in the poisoning of King Aegon III and Queen Daenaera had earned her death by the king's law and a hard penance by her mother's. Cassandra found herself wed to a man thirty years her senior and stepmother to a swarming herd of half-grown Brownhills overnight, and Elenda Caron of Storm's End was satisfied that her daughter had been given more to do at last than scheme.
