Daughter of King Aegon V Targaryen and Queen Betha of House Blackwood, born into the brood that her father meant to bind to the great houses of the realm by ordinary marriages. Aegon promised her to Luthor Tyrell, heir to Highgarden, as part of the slow knitting of the Reach to the Iron Throne, but Shaera would have none of it; in 240 AC she eloped with her elder brother Jaehaerys, who had himself been pledged to Celia Tully, and the pair were wed in secret against their father's wishes. The match revived the old Valyrian custom of brother and sister taking one another to wife, a practice the Targaryens had largely set aside in the years since the Dance. To Jaehaerys she bore two children, a son Aerys and a daughter Rhaella, whom she in turn saw wed to one another in the image of her own marriage. When her brother took the Iron Throne in 259 AC she was crowned at his side as Queen of the Seven Kingdoms.
