Third-born son of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen by her first husband Ser Laenor Velaryon, born at Dragonstone in 117 AC, named for his father's favourite knight and lover Ser Joffrey Lonmouth, and called Joff at his mother's court. He was a strapping lad with brown eyes and brown hair and a pug nose, like his elder brothers Jacaerys and Lucerys, and the court whispered that all three brothers had been got by the great captain of his mother's household Ser Harwin Breakbones Strong. He was three years old when his ten-year-old uncle Prince Aemond came down upon them on Driftmark and slapped him for the sport of claiming a dragon for himself; the boys' answering brawl cost Prince Aemond the left eye, and would be remembered as the spark that lit the long fuse to the Dance. The boy's own dragon was the young Tyraxes. When the war came in 129 AC he was eleven and asked to ride for his mother's standard with his older brothers Jacaerys and Lucerys, and was kept back for his years; when his brothers were both killed within a few months — Luke on Arrax over Shipbreaker Bay to his uncle Aemond on Vhagar, then Jace at the Battle of the Gullet — he was sent to Gulltown for his keeping and styled Prince of Dragonstone in his elder brother's place. The fall of King's Landing in 130 AC brought him back to the Red Keep for his investiture, and there in the same year the Shepherd's mob marched on the Dragonpit. Forbidden to ride forth though his own Tyraxes was chained within the dome, he vaulted bareback onto his mother's larger she-dragon Syrax whom he had never ridden, hoping to come to Tyraxes's rescue from above. Syrax threw him in the air over Flea Bottom; he came down two hundred feet upon a steep-pitched roof, slid down its tiles, and broke his back on the cobbles of the alley forty feet below.
