A wildling girl of Craster's Keep beyond the Wall, daughter of the savage Craster by one of his many wives and, when she came of age, taken to wife by him in turn, for that was the way of the man, who kept his daughters and gave his sons to the cold gods of the wood. She was named for the gillyflower, and was pale and dark-haired and shy of voice, raised in a single half-league of forest and acquainted with no man save her father until the Old Bear's ranging brought the Night's Watch to her father's hall.

There she befriended Samwell Tarly, big and frightened and kind, and begged him to carry off the child in her belly should it prove a boy. After the mutineers cut Craster down at his own table she fled south with Sam and the babe in her arms, sheltered through the long flight by Coldhands, and crossed beneath the Wall by the Black Gate at the Nightfort. Lord Commander Snow afterward sent her on to Oldtown to nurse the son of Dalla in place of her own (a switch she made weeping), and she lay at last with Samwell aboard the Cinnamon Wind on the night before Maester Aemon was given to the sea.
