Portrait of Florence Fossoway

Florence Fossoway (The Apple Counter)

Born

Daughter of House Fossoway of Cider Hall and the cleverest of her line, raised to count and tally as soon as her fingers could grip a quill — Septon Barth, the Hand to King Jaehaerys the Conciliator, would after say that she had been "counting apples since she learned to walk." She was married young to Martyn Tyrell, a younger son of Lord Bertrand Tyrell of Highgarden, and within a year or two of taking up her chatelaine had put her hand to the rolls of Highgarden and increased the incomes of House Tyrell by better than a third, paying off old debts of the Conciliator's father and turning a tidy profit on the wool of the Mander. Word of her gift travelled to King's Landing, and when Septon Barth at last found himself in need of a master of coin in 58 AC he put forward Martyn Tyrell's name, intending plainly that Florence should be the one to keep the realm's ledgers from her chambers at the Red Keep. The realm prospered under their tenure as nearly as it had under the late Rego Draz, and the singers called her the apple counter ever after.
