Balon banished him from the Iron Islands during the long peace after the Rebellion for reasons the Greyjoys do not speak of, and for years he sailed the ends of the earth: to Valyria, to Asshai by the Shadow, taking ships and slaves and stranger things.
He returned to Pyke the day after his brother's death in 299 AC and took the Seastone Chair at the kingsmoot that followed, outbidding his brother Victarion and his niece Asha both. The kingdom he proclaims himself master of stretches further with every chapter of the song, though the maesters in Oldtown have begun to mutter that he carries something darker than ambition home in the holds of his fleet.
