Second son of Brandon Stark, who inherited Winterfell after the childless death of his elder brother Rodwell, and Lord of Winterfell through the long, hard reign that drew the second century to its close. He wed Lady Lorra Royce of Runestone, and by her had seven children — Donnor, Willam, Artos the Implacable, the daughters Berena and Alysanne, Errold, and Rodrik the Wandering Wolf — whose contending widows and children would carry the convoluted succession of the Starks past the turn of the century.
In his last years Lord Beron mustered the levies of the north to throw back the ironborn of Dagon Greyjoy, who had raided the western shore from Cape Kraken to Bear Island. Beron was mortally wounded in the long campaign that followed; as he lay dying in the great hall at Winterfell, the multiple widows of his various sons — and their own children — fell to pushing rival succession claims against one another, in the long quarrel the maesters call The She-Wolves of Winterfell. The lordship passed in due time to his eldest son Donnor and after his early death to his second son Willam, but every Stark of the modern line descends from Beron and Lorra Royce.
