When Eddard returned from the south with Winterfell on his shoulders and an infant bastard in his arms, Benjen took the black rather than serve as steward of a hall that was no longer his. Rose to First Ranger of the Night's Watch. Vanished beyond the Wall on a ranging out of Castle Black not long before his nephew Jon arrived to swear the same oath; never returned.
